Gift Basket vs. Gift Card: Which Corporate Gift Is Right for Your Employee or Client?

The current state of corporate gifting

Before we compare the two options, it helps to understand what the data actually says.

Gift cards are currently the most widely used non-cash reward in both North America and Europe, accounting for about 30% to 34% of all non-cash rewards spending. Nearly 70% of North American companies and 60% of European companies expect to increase their use of gift cards in the coming year. Gift cards have also overtaken merchandise as the most widely used event gift in both regions.

This does not mean gift cards are always the right choice. But it does mean the market is shifting clearly in their favour. As a gift hamper company, we could simply ignore this trend and insist that hampers are always better. That would not be honest, and it would not be helpful to you.

Instead, we want to help you understand when each option works best, so you can make the right decision for your specific situation.

When a gift card is the better choice

There are situations where a gift card makes more sense than a hamper.

When you do not know the person well. If you are sending a gift to someone you have never met, or someone whose preferences are completely unknown, a gift card is safer. You do not risk giving them something they do not like or cannot use.

When the recipient lives in a different country. Shipping a hamper internationally can be expensive and complicated. A digital gift card avoids customs, delays, and shipping costs. This is one area where gift cards clearly win.

When the recipient has specific dietary or lifestyle restrictions. If you do not know whether they are vegan, gluten-free, diabetic, or have allergies, a hamper can be risky. A gift card lets them choose what works for them.

When you are on a very tight budget. Gift cards can be purchased for any amount, while a quality hamper usually starts at a higher price point. If your budget is under €25, a gift card may be the only option.

When speed matters. A gift card can be sent immediately via email. A hamper requires time for packaging and delivery. If you need a gift to arrive today, a gift card is the practical choice.

When you want to give the recipient complete freedom. Some people simply prefer to choose their own gifts. A gift card respects that preference and avoids any risk of giving something unwanted.

When you want to avoid the "price tag" problem. Some people feel uncomfortable giving a gift card because the amount is printed right there on the card. It can feel like you're announcing exactly how much you spent, which takes away from the thoughtfulness. A gift basket, on the other hand, hides the individual cost of each item. The recipient enjoys the overall experience without knowing exactly what you paid for each piece. For some senders, that mystery is part of the charm.

When a gift basket is clearly better

When you want the recipient to feel valued. A gift basket says, "I thought about you." A gift card says, "I thought about sending something." The difference is significant, especially in corporate relationships where building trust and connection matters.

When you want to make a first impression. For a new employee, a welcome basket is a powerful gesture. It tells them they are joining a company that cares about details and about people. A gift card emailed on their first day does not have the same effect.

When you want the gift to be remembered. A hamper creates a moment. The recipient opens it, explores it, and shares it. That moment is memorable. A gift card is forgettable.

When you want to align with your company values. If your company values quality, attention to detail, or sustainability, a gift basket reflects those values. A gift card does not.

When you want to encourage sharing. A hamper with food, coffee, or treats is often shared with others. The recipient's family, partner, or team members also experience the gift. That extends its impact far beyond the original recipient.

When you want to stand out. Everyone gives gift cards. They are the default option. A thoughtfully curated hamper stands out precisely because it is different.

The cost comparison

Gift cards and gift baskets cost roughly the same amount to purchase, but the value they deliver is different.

A €50 gift card gives the recipient exactly €50 to spend. That is fair and transparent. But it does not feel like more than €50. It feels like exactly what it is.

A €50 gift basket contains items that would cost more if purchased separately. The recipient receives €50 worth of goods, but they feel like they are receiving more because of the presentation, the variety, and the thought behind it. In that sense, a gift basket can feel like a better value even when the price is the same.

The psychological difference

This is perhaps the most important factor. Gift cards are transactional. They are a transfer of value from one person to another. The recipient spends it, and the transaction is complete.

A gift basket is relational. It is an offering of care and attention. The recipient opens it, explores it, and feels something. That feeling - being seen, being appreciated, is what builds loyalty, connection, and trust.

In a corporate setting, those emotional outcomes matter. They are what turn a client into a long-term partner. They are what make an employee feel like part of a team. A gift card cannot deliver that.

What about a hybrid approach?

You do not have to choose one or the other. Some companies combine both: a small gift basket with a modest gift card inside.

This approach works well in certain situations. The basket provides the tangible, thoughtful experience. The gift card gives the recipient some flexibility to choose something extra for themselves.

If you want to send a welcome gift to a new employee, for example, you could include a small hamper with coffee and a notebook, along with a €20 gift card for a local coffee shop. The basket feels personal and intentional. The gift card is a practical bonus.
